In training

When Elliot was about Bug's age, I started giving him small jobs to do to help me. He'd go get me a diaper, throw something in the trash, hand me a book, things like that. As he got older, I started thinking about how helpful he could be, but didn't think he'd be willing. Well, so far he hasn't figured out that daily chores aren't really fun. He LOVES cleaning the floor with me. And he really is helpful. I let him loose with a small sponge and he dips and wipes away. It makes up for some of the inCREDible defiance we've been experiencing lately. Wow.
He also enjoys putting away silverware, throwing away diapers, and setting the table. He's for hire. Fifty cents an hour. No wait. I'll pay you...

This is just a little hint of things to come. So many people miss this potential gold mine of help and then wonder why their children have no understanding of all the work that goes into keeping a home! You and Andri started to learn to make your bed as soon as you got out of a crib. They were awful at first but I never touched them and you got better. You go mama!

His future wife will thank you for teaching him how to do floors! I don't think John's mopped a floor in our 23 years of marriage, but he makes up for it in other areas! Yeah!!

This is the golden age of doing chores cheerfully. Mine did lot of chores starting very early. I almost believe in them more that school (Don't yell. I said "almost"). Mine became reluctant as they grew older and they would grinch at me a lot. But I stuck with it. And now they are competent adults who can teach themselves how to do almost anything - rebuild car engines, become urban farmers, run a Bucks...I get a lot of joy and satisfaction from that. I believe passionately in chores.
